Principal
Dear Fairview community,
This week has seen our Grade 3 and 5 students start undertaking NAPLAN testing. The way that these students have already shown the willingness to give their best during this time should be really commended. It is important to note that NAPLAN provides a ‘point in time’ assessment and is a way of tracking individual and school progress over time. More importantly though the ‘new’ approach that the school is undertaking in developing our students as lifelong readers is highly exciting. This is very much in line with the approach that all DECYP schools across the state are going and I am very proud of our staff and students in their willingness to engage in a new way of doing things. One big difference for home is that we are still continuing with a home reading program, however, the use of ‘levelled readers’ is something that is now done from an interest based point of view not as a judgement of where the student is currently at with their reading.
I really enjoyed seeing our STAR values on display during the Athletics Carnival and it was great to see such a high community turn out. Thank you to Mr. Oxley, his helpers, and our student leaders for assisting in such a great day. We have also been fortunate to have a number of other incursions with BBL Cricket and a number of bike riding opportunities being undertaken. In the next fortnight we begin our grade 3-6 Swimming and Water Safety program.
I know this is a regular thing to mention in my newsletter pieces but please ensure you are driving / walking safely in and around our school grounds. Student safety is of utmost importance.
I am looking forward to seeing some of the beautiful Derwent Valley autumn weather over the coming months.
Regards,
David

Kinder Burdon
In Kinder Burdon, we have been busy practicing the critical markers on the Kindergarten Development Check (KDC). One focus has been, 11- can copy and continue a pattern using 2 items. The students have been using unifix cubes and teddy counters to show their understandings. Moving forward, we will create patterns with natural materials and objects found in our world.

1 Clements
It has been a very busy start to the term this year for grade one. In science, we have been learning about our local habitats, including our school and thinking about living and non-living things. We took out work outside to see what living and non-living things we could find around our school. We recorded our findings in our science books and brought them back to class to add our finishing touches.
We can't wait to learn more about different types of habitats and what interesting things we can find!

3/4A Thornton
In Grade 3/4 Thornton we have been investigating the structure of Narratives. We have recently looked at the orientation of a story and how it sets the scene by introducing the characters and setting. We had a go at creating our own characters and made sure to give them names and a backstory. It was amazing to see so many different and unique characters, each with their own sense of style and creativity.
Please enjoy some of our wonderful work.
